Medicinal uses of rocket

Hello everyone. Rocket has a fresh, peppery watercress like flavour. Rocket probably originated from the Mediterranean. It has been harvested from the wild for a long time. Rocket has been cultivated for about the last 400 years in countries in Europe and countries in the Middle East. The leaves are rich in antioxidants. The leaves contain good quantities of vitamin C, fibre and carotenoids. The seeds are rich in oil. The seeds have a very good ratio of 2:1 of omega 3 to omega 6 . The seeds are also rich in vitamin E. Which makes the oil more resistant to becoming rancid. The oil can be used in salads as a dressing and can be used in cooking. The oil also has been used to fuel lamps and to soften and smooth skin. The flower heads are also edible. In subtropical areas, put your seeds in April and May. Rocket likes the cooler weather. Medicinal uses of the sweet cicely herb

Hello everyone. All parts of the plant can be used in a tonic. The tonic is used to strenghten the digestive system and to help relieve indigestion. Sweet cicely can be made into an ointment and applied to arthrtic pain, bruises and gouty areas. A tea can be made out of some sweet cicely leaves. The tea can be sipped for easing wheezing, dispersing phlegm, and for coughs and strenghthening the nerves. Sweet cicely is also known as the sugar saving herb. It is benefical for diabetics and dieters. The seeds taste like anise. The seeds can be eaten like lollies. A lot of herbs can be grown in Australia. Most are easy to grow. Medicinal uses of Kale

Hello everyone.  Kale contains good quantities of fibre and good levels of protein.  The leaves are very rich in vitamin C and vitamin K.  They are also very rich in Vitamin A.  Vitamin A is known to slow the progression of age - related macular degeneration and cataracts.  The leaves contain more lutein than any other food.  The juice from Kale has been associated with healing peptic ulcers.  Kale and collards have been thought to cure a wide range of complants including respiratory and blood circultion problems and gout.

GARLIC Allium sativum - medicinal actions include: digestive, antioxidant, antibiotic, expectorant, carminative, alterative, tonic, diuretic, antimicrodial, diaphoretic, antispasmodic, vulnerary, nervine, antiseptic, stomachic, chologogue, antibacterial, antiviral, vermifuge, anti-inflammatory and aphrodisiac. Garlic boosts immunity. It has been dubbed the anti-cancer food. As an anti-inflammatory it can give relief from arthritis, rheumatism, gout and lumbago. Also observed, is garlic's chelating action in the bloodstream to help neutralize or clear heavy metal toxicity. In our toxic world this is valuable information. Grow An Endless Amount of Ginger Indoors

Zingiber Officinale, or what we call ginger, is one of the easiest plants to propagate and harvest. Being delicious, it is also one of the easiest to eat, and takes the place of many treatments found in the medicine cabinet. Gingersol and shogaols are the active chemical constituents in ginger that are attributed to its healing properties and have been known to have anti-inflammatory properties (NSAIDs), work as immunity boosters, and combat cancerous cells. Ginger has long been known as a panacea for stomach conditions like motion sickness, nausea, morning sickness, and the pesky stomach flu due to its ability to relax the intestinal tract. Even more, it’s spicy which helps get the metabolism going as well as cleansing the colon. The health benefits of ginger are irrefutable and numerous but lets cut to the revolutionary act of growing your own food and medicine! Ginger is incredibly easy to grow, green thumb or not, but we will break it down step by step. For ease of communication we will call it ginger or ginger root even though ginger is actually the whole plant which has foliage (leaves) and a rhizome, which itself has roots. The part that you buy at the store, peel and eat is actually the ‘rhizome’. This is the ginger rhizome we can plant: First, let’s choose a piece of ginger to plant. You can order one from a seed catalog or find one in a nursery, but I find that it’s easiest just to buy a piece at the store. Try to make it a health-food store or a natural store where the ginger wont be sprayed to oblivion with chemicals that actually inhibit the growth of roots – which is what we are looking to do in this project. If the ginger has been sprayed you will need to soak it for a night or two until the chemicals dissipate. Now, out of the healthy natural gingers try to pick a piece that is thick, with a nice peel, and has lots of nubs. Nubs?! What I mean by nubs is that it isn’t a smooth shoot but has lots of dips and curves in it that are almost protruding like little fingers. These nubs are the parts of the rhizome that will regrow into a new plant. Now, let’s talk soil. The soil needs to be ‘loamy’, which just describes the particles that make up the soil. Loam is sand, silt, and clay and it’s these properties that define how well the soil holds moisture. In the case of ginger we need a soil that will retain some moisture so that it never dries out but we want to make sure that we don’t have soppy dense soil that will drown and suffocate our root. The soil also needs to be nutrient rich which can be maintained by adding organic matter, compost, or an organic fertilizer. Now, let’s talk containers. Basically, pick a container where you can plant your ginger and allow it some space to grow, but it doesn’t need much. I try to recycle a container that I have already used for something else. The ginger root stays towards the top of the soil not extending too far down so a shallow container works well. I cut an old plastic juice jug, about a gallon size, that so it was about 4-5 inches deep, 7 inches wide and slit holes in the bottom to make sure there was proper drainage. Now, let’s plant! Fill your vessel with soil. I like to pre-water mine so that the soil if uniformly damp but has had time to drain through. You can plant your ginger whole or you can cut it into smaller pieces. I like to cut the ginger into chunks but its important to make sure that theses chunks all have growth nubs on them. After I cut the ginger I let it heal over night so that there isn’t an open juicy wound. Now, place your pieces of ginger into the soil, nubs up, and cover with an inch or so of loose soil. Now, we need to sustain the life of this plant but caring for your ginger is as easy as the planting requirements. You shouldn’t ever let it dry out but you don’t need to over water it either. I check the soil with my thumb: if I feel moisture and it sticks to my skin a little bit, then I leave it alone. If the soil feels almost sandy and drops off of my skin, I give the rhizome a nice spritzer. I never drop more than a shot of water on my ginger, unlike other plants where you soak the soil through and through. Ginger needs some sunlight, different people have different recommendations, but I keep mine in a room where it never gets direct sunlight, because I don’t have a room with direct sunlight, and it does fine. Being a tropical plant it does like warm humid conditions. These conditions don’t need to be replicated as it can be hard, but try to keep that in mind when choosing a home for your plant. Don’t leave it outside when it’s going to frost, don’t leave it in direct sunlight to dry out, don’t put it in the room that has the worse draft… Just be mindful and the job is easy. I’ve seen ginger survive year round in Vermont under less than optimal conditions which makes me think it can be grown close to anywhere! (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Wala! The new rhizomes won’t be fully matured for at least 8-10 months but during that period you can cut off chunks of the root for use without harming the plant as it will regenerate. Fennel For Painful Periods: A Clinically Proven Drug Alternative

Painful periods (primary dysmenorrhea) afflict approximately 25% of all women, with estimates for adolescents reaching as high as 90%.[i]  Given the prevalence of this disabling condition, and that treatment usually involves NSAID drugs and sometimes oral contraceptives – both of which have serious, even life-threatening side effects – natural alternatives are desperately needed.  So what better place to look than your spice rack, which an under reported body of clinical research indicates may offer solutions at least as effective as drugs.

There are no less than three clinical studies in the medical literature comparing fennel to the NSAID drug mefenamic acid for the treatment of painful periods in women.

The first, which occurred in 2002, randomized two groups of 55 high-school girls (mean age 13) to receive either fennel seed extract or mefenamic acid for 2 months. The remarkable results showing the superiority of fennel were reported as follows:

“In the fennel group, 80% of girls and in the mefenamic acid group, 73% of girls showed complete pain relief or pain decrease, while 80% in the fennel group and 62% in the mefenamic acid group no longer needed to rest. There was no significant difference between the 2 groups in the level of pain relief.”

The next study, published in 2003, took 60 girls (mean age 12.5) with primary dysmenorrhea, administering either either 25 drops of 2% essence of fennel seed extract (taken every 4 hours) or 250 mg (taken every 6 hours) of mefenamic acid over the course of their menstrual cycle.

They reported their results as follows:

The essence of fennel can be used as a safe and effective herbal drug for primary dysmenorrhea, however, it may have a lower potency than mefenamic acid in the dosages used for this study.” [Note: “No complication was reported in mefenamic acid treated cycles, but five cases (16.6%) withdrew from the study due to fennel’s odor and one case (3.11%) reported a mild increase in the amount of her menstrual flow.

A third study, published this year in the Iranian Journal of Nursery and Midwifery, which as an open access article can be read in its entirety here, describes the results of a randomized parallel-group clinical trial, comparing the effects of 2% fennel extract drops to mefenamic acid (cap 250 mg) in the management of primary dysmenorrhea in 60 18-25 year olds.

The results of the study were reported as follows:

The present study showed that the efficacy of fennel drop 2% in pain relief in primary dysmenorrhea is comparable to the efficacy of common NSAIDs such as mefenamic acid cap. Investigators recommend that another product of fennel such as tab, cap, or fennel oil might be more acceptable than the essence. One subject had severe menstruation after taking fennel drop.

It should be emphasized that many herbs, and especially their seeds, are very powerful and should be treated with great respect, consideration and care. Because fennel is antispasmodic and causes muscular relaxation, it can significantly increase the risk of menstrual bleeding.

Medicinal benefits of Licorice (glycyrrhiza)

For more than 4,000 years around the globe, parts of Glycyrrhiza plants (licorice) have been used as a natural sweetener as well as an herbal medicine to treat a range of health conditions. Its effectiveness is once again reinforced in findings recently published in the Journal of Leukocyte Biology, where researchers note that components of the plant have the ability to potentially help stop metabolic disorders in their tracks.(1)

In particular, they found that the compound isoliquiritigenin (ILG) in Glycyrrhiza uralensis is able to help prevent high-fat, diet-related obesity, fatty liver disease (hepatic steatosis) and type 2 diabetes by stopping activation of NLRP3, a protein involved in such diseases.(2)

The study notes that "ILG potently attenuated HFD-induced obesity, hypercholesterolemia, and insulin resistance" in subjects that were fed a high-fat diet supplemented with ILG. To test effectiveness, other subjects in the study were fed just a high-fat diet, while others consumed a normal diet. Those with diet-related obesity, type 2 diabetes and hepatic steatosis benefited from ILG; additional details from the study's press release explain that "supplementation of ILG markedly improved these disorders."(2,3)

"Identification of small compounds that inhibit the NLRP3 inflammasome is required to design effective therapeutics," said Kiyoshi Takatsu, Ph.D., Department of Immunobiology and Pharmacological Genetics, Graduate School of Medicine and Pharmaceutical Science for Research at the University of Toyama in Toyama Japan, who was involved in this discovery. "We hope that our findings will provide new information and strategy that can be exploited for development of new herbal medication of those diseases."(2)

Indeed, it provides a great deal of hope for many with metabolic disorders, perhaps more so as traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is becoming more widely accepted in Western cultures. Through the years, it's gaining a stronghold in areas that have typically favored, and abided by, modern medical approaches.

TCM gaining increased levels of mainstream acceptance

For example, its use is being more carefully considered around the world, with an eye on possibly incorporating more of it in mainstream medical techniques. While some experts maintain that more research regarding pharmacological effectiveness and overall quality of TCM needs to be conducted, many are in agreement that integration of it may be beneficial.

Of TCM use in Western cultures, Professor Guo De-an, chief scientist at the Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica and a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said, "Several major western drug firms have invested in industrial co-operation projects." He has also explained that, while Chinese medicinal herbs are in use in places such as Singapore, Australia and southeast Asia, it's not very common in the United States and Europe, which make up the majority of the worldwide pharmaceutical market.(4)

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), over 29 million people in the United States have diabetes. It's estimated that hundreds of billions of dollars are spent annually in total medical costs as well as lost work and wages related to diabetes complications. As far as carrying around excess weight and weight-related problems, over one-third of United States adults are obese.(5,6)

"Obesity and associated metabolic disorders are one of the most important emerging medical conditions," says John Wherry, Ph.D., Deputy Editor of the Journal of Leukocyte Biology, where the TCM study was published. "Recent work demonstrates a critical role for obesity-driven inflammation in a multitude of medical problems arising from obesity with a central role for the inflammasome. This new work not only identifies a novel class of potential inflammasome inhibitors, but also demonstrates effectiveness in a preclinical model of obesity induced disease."(2)

Medicinal benefits of CAULIFLOWER Cauliflower is a nutrient rich vegetable that is excellent for supporting a strong immune system and optimum health. Cauliflower is also wonderful steamed, sauteed, or roasted. Spices such as turmeric, ginger, red pepper flakes, and paprika mix exceedingly well with cauliflower and provide a nutritional and medicinal boost. University of Texas just published their research into the long-term effects of marijuana 

With a drug war against marijuana still raging in more countries than not, the question of how long-term marijuana use effects the human brain is a pivotal question in its legalization. Although alcohol remains legal despite heaps of evidence to the dangers of long-term use, the fight to make marijuana available both with regard to its medical properties (especially in selectively killing cancer cells) and non-medical uses has frequently hinged on the various claims made about marijuana’s effects on the recreational user.

Luckily, the debate can finally move out from the realm of opinion into scientific evidence as researchers from the University of Texas just published their research into the long-term effects of marijuana use on the brain in PNAS (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences).

The researcher helped dispel the dying myth that marijuana use lowers IQ, and actually provides more evidence to marijuana’s potential role in fighting Alzheimer’s. The research revealed that earlier onset of regular marijuana use leads to greater structural and functional connectivity in the brain. The most significant increases in connectivity appear as an individual begins using marijuana, with results showing that the severity of use is directly correlated to greater connectivity.

Although these results will need to be confirmed with a larger sample (this was based on roughly 100 participants), the preliminary results do seem promising. More research will need to be done in order to see if these differences are caused by, or simply associated with, long term marijuana use. They also found reduced gray matter in the OFC (orbitofrontalcortex) in long-term users (which is a brain region associated with addiction). It is unclear whether this region is simply smaller in regular users (explaining their regular use) or if the use actually contributed to structural brain changes. These results will also need to be contrasted with other researcher showing that cannabinoids actually promote brain cell growth (neurogensis) even in adults.

As recently published in Reuters, researchers do not know why, but in the 23 states where medical marijuana is legal, deaths from opioid overdoses have decreased by almost 25%. (3) The researchers explained in JAMA that, “Medical cannabis laws are associated with significantly lower state-level opioid overdose mortality rates. Opioid analgesic overdose mortality continues to rise in the United States, driven by increases in prescribing for chronic pain.” (4) 

There are some who think of medical cannabis somehow as a dangerous gateway to drug use, yet many do not realize that prescription drugs actually have far greater potential for addiction. In the UK, for example, 1 million people are said to be addicted to over-the-counter and prescription drugs, which is significantly more than the number addicted to illegal drugs. (5) 

Why does medical marijuana get a negative rap? 

When it comes to cannabis, it’s important to know the difference between tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content versus cannabidiol (CBD). THC is the stuff that gets you “high,” while CBD has psychoactive properties that do not get you “high.” 

Dr. Allan Frankel, a board-certified internist in California, has treated patients with medical cannabis for the past 7 years. In fact, medical marijuana has been legal in California for 18 years. He explains, “What happened in the ’60s and ’70s was that due to desires for psychedelia, the changes in the war in Vietnam, and the war on drugs with Nixon, the types of strains that were available and the demand for psychedelia changes. Before we knew it, CBD – due to a lack of ‘stoniness’ – was bred out of a plant.” (6) 

The growers breeding out the all-important CBD produced a plant that mainly gets you “high.” As a result, the recognition of marijuana as something “medicinal” dropped away.

The snake gourd is in the same family as cucumbers and pumpkin vines.  It is best grown up a trallis or along a fence rather than along the ground as the fruit can rot in wet humid conditions.  The plants love to climb.  It's fruits look like light green striped snakes.  The fruit grows to about 2 metres long and 5cm diametre.  When the fruit reaches maturity, the skin turns into a bright orange.  This fruit has had a long history dating back to the Han dynasty.  The fruit was used to clear phlegm and coughs, to strenghten the lungs, diabetes, angina pectoris, to eliminate dysentery and other colon bacteria, stimulate the intestines, constipation, clear mastitis and increase milk production for mum's.  Scientific research has highlighted the potential of the plant protein compound Q. Purslane, also known as Portulaca oleracea, is considered a common weed to many that may even be growing in your garden right now, without your explicit invitation. It started its cultivation in India and Persia, and spread to the rest of the world. Some cultures pluck it out and throw it away with leaf clippings and other weeds, while others cultivate it specifically to eat as food. Purslane is an aesthetically attractive weed with fleshy leaves and often yellow flowers, but its health benefits are even more desirable.

Powerful Seeds Grow in Many Climates

The seeds of purslane are so powerful they can stay viable in land for up to 40 years – and this is a natural crop – no GMO! It grows in a well-tended garden and in arid climates, often equally as well. This resilient plant poses similar benefits for our immune systems and overall health.   

Often called pig weed (and it certainly would be better for your pigs than some of the GMO grain many farmers have been using to feed their livestock), Purslane has more beneficial Omega 3 fatty acids than many fish oils! The weed also has one of the highest levels of vitamin A among all leafy green vegetables (1320 IU/100 g, provides 44% of RDA). High Vitamin A foods can help protect us from many types of cancers and helps to boost eye health.

Furthermore, purslane is full of two different types of betalain alkaloid pigments – a reddish beta-cyanis and a yellow beta-xanthins, which are equally potent antioxidants and anti-mutagens. Also in purslane are vitamins C, and B-complex including riboflavin, pyridoxine, and niacin, as well as carotenoids, and trace minerals like iron, magnesium, and calcium.

Medicinal uses of saffron

Hello everyone.  Saffron is expensive to buy.  Many thousands of stigmas are needed for just a few grams.  Approximately 150 000 flowers are needed to produce a single kilogram of saffron.  The plant itself is easy to grow and tolerates a range of soil and climates.  It is thought that the ancestors of saffron originated from eastern Mediterranean and in Western Asia.  Saffron doesn't produce fertile seed so propagation is by cuttings.  The buddists used saffron to dye their robes.  The name saffron is derived from the word 'yellow" which refers to the dye product from soaked stigmas.  Saffron is rich in manganese, with some iron, phosphate, calcium and magnesium.  The stigma contains some vitamin C and B and folate.  Several recent studies have found saffron can reduce the incidence and treat cancer.  Saffron has strong antioxidant properties.  Saffron is used to treat many conditions including digestion issues, jaundice, rheumatism and reduce phlegm.  Saffron is used as an aphrodisiac, as a sedative and as an analgesic (for pain).  Saffron is also used to relieve mild to moderate depression.  Saffron could also be used to treat neurodegenerative disorders that accompany memory impairment.  Saffron is also used as clothes dye.  Love, Peace and harmony to you all.  Lesley.

Medical uses and the properties of Planttain Plant/herb

You’ve stepped on it, ignored it, and tried to eradicate it from your lawn. 

However, this innocuous little weed is one of the most useful medicines on the planet, just begging to be harvested. 

There are two major types of plantain in BC, Canada: Lance and Broadleaf. Generally, all 200-plus varieties of plantain yield the same results. 

It grows especially well in poor, rocky soil (such as driveways) and is often seen alongside dandelion. More often than not, you will see plantain growing in gravel pits and construction sites as nature seeks to regenerate the soil. Introduced to North America in the 1600s, it was once called “White Man’s Foot” by the Native Americans who witnessed that where the Europeans tread and disrupted the soil, plantain sprung up. 

Plantain has often been the go-to remedy for hikers plagued by mosquitoes. Because it draws toxins from the body with its astringent nature, plantain may be crushed (or chewed) and placed as a poultice directly over the site of bee stings, bug bites, acne, slivers, glass splinters, or rashes. Bandage the area and allow the plantain to work its magic for 4-12 hours. Plantain may also be used to create a balm for emergency kits, or an infusion used as a skin or general wash. It is also a notable, soothing remedy for hemorrhoids. 

Plantain is renowned for its healing effect on the digestive system. This is especially useful for anyone who has been damaged by antibiotics, anti-inflammatory or pain medications, food allergies, or Celiac disease. Both leaves and seeds specifically target the digestive system for healing. The leaves may be steeped as tea, added to soups, or dried with a sauce similar to kale chips. The seeds – a type of psyllium – can be ground or soaked for bulk mucilage or absorbable fibre, which, consumed before meals, may help with weight loss. 

Because plantain is a gentle expectorant and high in silica, an infusion can be helpful for lung problems, coughs, and colds. 

Plantain is almost a panacea for the human body, treating everything from all menstrual difficulties, all digestive issues, to nearly all skin complaints, and even arthritis. Add to salads, chew to ease thirst, or enjoy in stir fries. This versatile wild vegetable will keep you in good health for years to come!

Hello everyone.  Wild sarsparilla is also known as (rabbit's root, shot bush, wild licorice, and small spikenard).  Native to North America and is rich in fibre.  It can still be found growing in wild arears in the woods and moist areas.  The plant is adaptable to a wide range of climates.  The roots and fruits of this plant are edible.  Has been used to treat heart pain, ease sore throats, for digestive problems and can be used as an antiseptic.  It can be used in a poultice to treat sores, ulcers, rheumatism, burns, swellings and skin problems such as eczema.  Extracts from this plant have anticancer propeties, a Candian study found.  Can also be used to detox the body.  As a food, it's flavour is added to candies and confectionary.  Makes a flavoured tea.  Young shoots can be steamed and eaten.  The plant is a cold hardy species.  It can tolerate temperatures down to -35C.  Propagation can be with seeds or by cuttings.  It grows best in light to heavier shade.  Love, Peace and harmony to you all.  Lesley.

Medicinal uses of carrot

Hello everyone.  The carrot was actually derived from the wild.  It may be indiginous to the Middle East.  Then was taken to many European locations and then later introduced to the USA.  Carrots are loaded with Vitamin A (carotenoids).  Carotenoids are powerful antioxidants with strong  cancer fighting properties.  These antioxidants help prevent cancer.  Carrots improve vision.  Carrots also contain vitamin C, K, B, B6 biotin and folate.  Carrots have a low GI number.  Carrot juice has been used to stop diarrhoea in young children.  Carrots also are a good source of potassium.  Eating to many carrots will cause the skin to turn orange.  This is a sign that the liver is not coping with high levels of vitamin A.  Carrots are at their sweetest when they are young.  Carrots can be used in a wide variety of dishes.  Carrots prefer a temperate climate to grow well.  If grown in hot weather, the root growth will be reduced.  Carrots can tolerate mild frosts, but not severe cold weather.  Remember, the health benefits only apply to non hybrid, open pollinate or heirloom seed varities.  Mass produced varieties have no health benefits as the seed has been changed.  So, buy the non hybrid, open pollinated or heirloom seed and learn how to grow and seed save.  Love, Peace and healing to you all.  Lesley.
